How Long Does a Custom Engagement Ring Take?

A complete timeline — from first conversation to the moment it's on her finger.

The short answer

Most custom engagement rings at Jewelry by Cleo take 4–8 weeks from first conversation to delivery. Simple designs with a stone we already have in the vault can be done in 3–4 weeks. Complex pieces with custom CAD and unusual stones can run 8–10 weeks. Plan for 6 weeks as your baseline — and contact us at least 8 weeks before you need the ring in hand.

It's the question I get more than any other — usually from someone who has just gotten engaged, or who is quietly planning to, and suddenly realizes they have absolutely no idea how long this is going to take.

The internet will give you vague answers. "It depends." "Anywhere from a few weeks to several months." That's not helpful when you have a proposal date circled on your calendar and a ring that needs to exist by then.

So here is the actual timeline, broken down stage by stage — with honest estimates for each, and the factors that push it in either direction.

The Complete Custom Ring Timeline

A custom engagement ring at Jewelry by Cleo moves through five stages. Here's what happens at each one and how long it realistically takes:

Stage 1

The Consultation

1–3 days

We talk about your vision — the shape, the metal, the feeling you want when she looks at it. This can happen over WhatsApp, email, or our custom questionnaire. The more detail you give me upfront, the faster everything that follows moves. I ask about her style, her lifestyle, whether she prefers something minimal or something that makes a statement. Come with Pinterest saves, Instagram screenshots, or simply a feeling — any starting point works.

Stage 2

Stone Selection

3–10 days

This is where I spend my time. Once I know what you're envisioning, I source stones that match — scrolling through thousands of lab-grown and natural diamonds to find the ones with the right ratio, zero fuzzy inclusions, and that specific watery sparkle a certificate can't capture. I send you a curated shortlist, usually with 4K video so you can see how each stone behaves in real light. For common shapes like round brilliants, I can often turn this around in a few days. For rarer cuts — old miners, elongated cushions, precise-ratio marquises — it can take a week or more to find the right one.

Stage 3

CAD Design & Approval

5–10 days

Once the stone is confirmed, our CAD designer builds a 3D rendering of your ring — exact prong placement, band profile, any engravings or detail work. You see exactly what you're getting before anything is cast. Most clients approve on the first or second round. If you want significant changes — a different band profile, modified prong style, added detail — each revision adds a few days. This is the stage where being decisive makes the biggest difference to your timeline.

Stage 4

Casting & Production

7–14 days

The approved CAD goes to our trusted US craftspeople for casting in your chosen metal — 14k gold, 18k gold, or platinum. The metal is poured, set, polished, and finished. Platinum takes slightly longer than gold because it requires more specialized handling. This stage is largely out of our hands once it begins — it's in the hands of skilled craftspeople — but we track every piece and follow up if timelines slip.

Stage 5

Setting, QC & Shipping

5–7 days

The stone is set, the ring goes through quality control — prong check, polish, security test — and then ships to you insured. We photograph the finished piece before it leaves. For custom orders, you receive a final photo confirmation before shipping, so you know exactly what's on its way. Shipping is 2–3 business days within the US.

Fastest possible: 3–4 weeks — simple design, stone in stock, decisive client, no revisions
Typical timeline: 5–7 weeks — standard custom design, stone sourcing, 1-2 CAD revisions
Complex pieces: 8–10 weeks — rare stone shape, intricate design, platinum, multiple revisions

What Makes It Faster

You approve the CAD quickly and decisively

You choose 14k gold over platinum

You start the process at least 6 weeks before you need it

Multiple CAD revisions — each round adds 3–5 days

Platinum setting — requires more specialized production time

Complex design with pavé, halo, or intricate detail work

Sourcing a natural diamond of a specific pedigree

Holidays — production timelines extend in November and December

Planning Around a Proposal Date

This is the question underneath the question. Most people asking, "how long does this take" are actually asking "can I get this done in time."

Here's how to work backward from your date:

Know your proposal date — even if it's approximate, having a target date lets us build the timeline around it
Subtract 1 week for buffer — you want the ring in hand before you need it, not the day of
Subtract 1 week for shipping and QC
That's your production deadline — count back 4–7 weeks from there
That's when you need to start

Example: You want to propose on July 4th. Subtract 1 week buffer — you want the ring by June 27th. Subtract shipping — production needs to be complete by June 20th. Count back 6 weeks — you need to start the process by May 9th.

"The biggest mistake people make is waiting until they're ready to propose to start the ring. Start the ring first. Everything else can wait."

Can I Rush a Custom Ring?

Sometimes. It depends on where in the process we are and what the design requires.

If you contact me with 3 weeks to go and a clear vision, I will do everything I can. I've made it work in less time for the right circumstances — a stone already sourced, a simple setting, a decisive client. But I won't promise a timeline I can't deliver, and I won't cut corners on a piece someone is going to wear every day for the rest of their life.

If your timeline is tight, tell me upfront. We'll figure out what's possible together — and if a fully custom piece isn't realistic, I'll be honest about that and offer alternatives that can get you something beautiful in time.

What About Semi-Custom?

If your timeline is genuinely short — less than 4 weeks — our semi-custom settings are worth considering. You choose from our curated setting styles and we source the stone around it. The design process is shorter because the setting framework already exists. Timeline: 3–4 weeks in most cases.

It's not the same as fully bespoke — but it's still personal, still handcrafted in the US, still with a stone personally vetted by me. And it can be extraordinary.

The Honest Bottom Line

Custom engagement rings take time because they're made for one specific person. Every decision — the stone, the metal, the prong placement, the band profile — is made intentionally for her, and that takes more than a week.

But it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Most of my clients tell me the process was one of the best parts — seeing it come together, making decisions that matter, knowing exactly what's being made and why.

The best time to start is as early as you can. The second-best time is right now.
