The Icon: Why the Round Brilliant Diamond is the Ultimate JbC Classic

There is a reason why, despite centuries of evolving trends, the Round Brilliant remains the most popular diamond shape in the world. It isn’t just about tradition—it’s about physics. The round diamond is the only shape specifically engineered to reflect the maximum amount of light possible.

At Jewelry by Cleo, we treat the search for a round diamond with a different kind of reverence. While a cushion cut is about "fire" and "warmth," a round diamond is about brilliance—that blinding, white light that makes a stone visible from across a crowded room.

The Science of Sparkle

The modern round brilliant features 57 or 58 facets, all working together like a complex system of mirrors. In our [Loose Stone Steals] section, we look for stones where these mirrors are aligned with surgical precision. When a round diamond is cut to "Ideal" or "Excellent" proportions, the light enters through the top, bounces off the sides, and reflects right back into your eyes.

Why Buy a Round from Jewelry by Cleo?

Because round diamonds are the "standard," many big-box retailers treat them like a commodity. At JbC, we don't. We hand-select our rounds based on Scintillation—the way the diamond flashes as you move your hand.

When you browse the JbC Vault, you’re looking at stones that Gabrielle and our team have vetted for:

  • The "Hearts & Arrows" effect: A sign of perfect optical symmetry.

  • Lack of "leaking": Ensuring light doesn't escape through the bottom of the stone.

  • Visual Size: Ensuring the stone "faces up" its full carat weight.

JbC advice

Round Diamond 4Cs

Round diamonds are the most expensive shape per carat because they require the most "rough" diamond to be cut away. To get the best value, you need to know which of the 4Cs to prioritize.

CUT (The Non-Negotiable)
In rounds, Cut is King. A poorly cut round diamond will look dull, no matter how high its color or clarity.

  • JbC Advice: Only ever buy "Excellent" or "Ideal" cut rounds. This is the one category where we never recommend compromising. A perfectly cut stone can even make a slightly lower color grade look whiter!

COLOR (The Sweet Spot)
Because rounds reflect so much light, they are better at "masking" color than any other shape.

  • JbC Advice: While D–F is the peak of luxury, an H or I color round diamond will look completely colorless to the naked eye when set in white gold or platinum. This is the "value sweet spot" where you can save significantly without losing the look.

CLARITY (Eye-Clean is the Goal)
Rounds are excellent at hiding tiny imperfections because of their intense sparkle.

  • JbC Advice: Don't pay for "Flawless" on a certificate. Aim for VS2 or SI1. As long as the stone is "eye-clean" (meaning no visible marks to the naked eye), it will look identical to a stone that costs thousands more.

CARAT (The Illusion of Size)
Because rounds are perfectly circular, they often appear larger than fancy shapes (like cushions or emeralds) of the same weight.

  • JbC Advice: If you are on the cusp of a carat weight (e.g., 1.95ct vs 2.00ct), go for the lower number. You can save a lot of money by staying just under the "magic numbers" (1ct, 1.5ct, 2ct) with zero visible difference in size.

Styling Your Round Diamond

A round diamond is a "chameleon"—it takes on the personality of whatever setting you choose.

  • The Classic Solitaire: Our 4-prong "Kate" or 6-prong settings are the gold standard. It’s clean, architectural, and allows the most light to hit the stone from the sides.
  • The Fancy Trilogy: Flanking a round center with two smaller diamonds adds a level of luxury and finger coverage that feels incredibly substantial.
  • The Modern Twist: For a contemporary edge, try setting your round diamond in a bezel setting or with a hidden halo for that secret JbC sparkle.
