Emerald Diamond 4Cs

Emerald cuts are "honest" stones. Their large, open tables act like windows, meaning they hide nothing. Here is how to shop the specs like a pro.

CLARITY (The Highest Priority)
In a round diamond, you can hide inclusions behind a wall of sparkle. In an emerald cut, there is nowhere to hide.

JbC Advice: This is the one shape where we suggest moving up the clarity scale. While we usually love a "good deal" SI1, for emeralds, we recommend VS1 or higher to ensure no tiny marks are visible through that clear top "window."

COLOR (Sensitivity Check)
Step cuts like the emerald tend to show their body color more than brilliant cuts.

JbC Advice: If you are setting the stone in Platinum or White Gold, stay in the D–F range. If you love a vintage-inspired Yellow Gold setting, a G or H will look beautiful and creamy, though you may start to see a hint of warmth at the edges.

CUT (Watch for "Windowing")
"Windowing" happens when the stone is cut too shallow, allowing you to see straight through the bottom of the diamond like clear glass.

JbC Advice: We hand-vet our emeralds for a Depth % between 60% and 68%. This ensures the stone has enough "meat" to reflect light back to your eye rather than letting it leak out the bottom.

SYMMETRY (Parallel Perfection)
Because the lines are so straight, any misalignment is immediately obvious.

JbC Advice: Look for "Excellent" Polish and Symmetry on the GIA report. You want those long facets to be perfectly parallel for that crisp, mirror-like flash.
