Pear Diamond: The Art of the Teardrop - Jewelry by Cleo

Pear Diamond: The Art of the Teardrop

The Pear Cut (also known as the teardrop) is the ultimate choice for the woman who wants the best of both worlds. It combines the rounded, brilliant sparkle of a Round diamond with the dramatic, elongated point of a Marquise.

At Jewelry by Cleo, we call the pear cut the "versatile showstopper." It is feminine, edgy, and uniquely flattering. Whether worn in a classic orientation or a modern "flipped" style, a pear diamond is an instant conversation starter.

The Art of the Teardrop

The pear cut is a "hybrid" shape that offers a unique set of visual advantages. It’s a shape that feels both organic and high-fashion.

  • Elongating Grace: Like the Oval and Marquise, the pear cut draws the eye upward, making the finger appear longer and more elegant.

  • The "Weighty" Look: Because pear cuts are often shallower than rounds, they have a large "face-up" size. This means you get a lot of visual "bang for your buck" in terms of surface area.

  • Asymmetrical Charm: The asymmetry of the pear allows for creative styling that most other shapes can't pull off.

Finding the "Perfect" Pear

Pear diamonds are notoriously difficult to cut because the "shoulders" (the rounded part) need to be perfectly symmetrical with the "point." When browsing the JbC Vault, here is how we evaluate their silhouette:

  • The Classic Teardrop: A ratio of 1.50 to 1.65. This is the most popular choice—balanced, graceful, and timeless.

  • The Long & Lean: A ratio of 1.70 or higher. This creates a sharper, more modern look that is perfect for a sleek solitaire.

  • The "Chubby" Pear: A ratio closer to 1.45. These look substantial and bold, offering a softer, rounder appearance.

Styling Your Pear at Jewelry by Cleo

The fun part of a pear diamond is that there is no "wrong" way to wear it.

  • The Classic Point-Up: This is the most traditional way to wear a pear. It maximizes the lengthening effect on the finger and looks stunning in our Cleo Thin-Band Solitaire.

  • The "Toi et Moi": One of our favorite JbC trends. Pairing a pear diamond with an emerald or round cut in a two-stone ring creates a masterpiece of contrast.

  • The East-West Bezel: For a completely unexpected, modern look, we love setting a pear diamond horizontally. It’s edgy, low-profile, and incredibly durable for everyday wear.

Pro Tip: Always ensure your pear is set with a V-prong at the tip. This specialized prong protects that sharp point from catching on sweaters or accidentally chipping.

JbC advice

Pear Diamond 4Cs

Pear shapes are technically complex. Because they are asymmetrical, they require a specialized eye to ensure they don't look "lopsided" or "dull."

CUT (The "Bow-Tie" & The Point)
Like Ovals and Marquises, pears are prone to the "bow-tie" effect.

  • JbC Advice: We look for stones where the bow-tie is minimal. Furthermore, we check the "wings" (the sides of the point) to make sure they aren't too flat or too bulged. You want a smooth, continuous curve from the rounded end to the point.

COLOR (Watch the Tip)
Color tends to concentrate in the pointed tip of a pear diamond.

  • JbC Advice: If you want a perfectly white stone, we recommend staying H or higher. If you are choosing a Yellow Gold setting, you can safely drop to an I or J for a beautiful, vintage warmth—just know the point might show a hint more "tint" than the rounded top.

CLARITY (Protect the Vulnerable)
The point of a pear is its most fragile part.

  • JbC Advice: We prioritize "Eye-Clean" VS2 or SI1 stones. We specifically avoid stones with large inclusions near the tip, as these can make the point more prone to chipping during the setting process.

SYMMETRY (Non-Negotiable)
If you draw a line down the center of a pear diamond, the two sides should be mirror images.

  • JbC Advice: We hand-check every stone to ensure the "shoulders" are even. An asymmetrical pear will always look slightly "tilted" once it’s on your finger.
