What is a moval cut?

A moval is exactly what it sounds like: a cross between a marquise and an oval. It keeps the long, elongated silhouette of an oval but adds the softly pointed ends of a marquise — gentler than a true marquise's sharp tips, more distinctive than a plain oval. The result is a shape that looks elegant, elongating on the finger, and just a little bit unexpected.

Movals have quietly become one of the most-requested shapes in my inbox — and it's easy to see why. The elongated outline makes fingers look long and slender. How to choose a moval

• Ratio is everything. Movals typically look best around a 1.8–2.2 length-to-width ratio. More elongated = more dramatic; closer to 1.8 = softer and more classic.
• Mind the bowtie. Like ovals and marquises, elongated cuts can show a "bowtie" — a dark shadow across the center. A well-cut stone minimizes it. (This is another reason to see the stone on video, not in a still.)
• Protect the points. The gently pointed ends are the most vulnerable spot, so I always set them with a secure prong or a low bezel.
• Lab-grown makes size easy. Want real presence? A 2.5–3 ct lab moval gives you a showstopper without the natural-stone premium.
