Made with Heart: the Heart Shape Diamond

The Heart Shape Diamond is the ultimate symbol of love, but at Jewelry by Cleo, we see it as more than just a romantic gesture—it is a masterpiece of diamond cutting. It is the most technically difficult shape to create, requiring a master cutter to ensure perfect symmetry and a graceful silhouette.

If you are a true romantic or someone who loves a bold, feminine statement, the heart shape is your perfect match. It is playful, meaningful, and completely unique in our online shop.

The Ultimate Symbol of Romance

The heart shape is essentially a modified "Pear" cut with a cleft at the top. It’s a shape that carries a heavy emotional weight, making it a popular choice for anniversaries, promise rings, and for the bride who wants a ring that is unapologetically "her."

  • Unique Character: In a sea of rounds and ovals, the heart shape stands out immediately. It is a conversation piece that tells a story before you even say a word.

  • Brilliant Sparkle: Because it uses a brilliant-cut facet pattern (similar to a round diamond), the heart shape offers incredible light return and "fire."

  • The "Cleo" Twist: We love seeing heart shapes styled in unexpected ways—like a signature JbC pinky ring or a delicate pendant.

Finding the "Golden Silhouette"

Not all hearts are created equal. When browsing our Loose Stone Steals, you’ll want to look for a stone that looks like a "true" heart, not a triangle with rounded corners.

  • The Ideal Ratio: We look for a ratio of 1.00, meaning the stone is as wide as it is long. This creates that classic, balanced heart look.

  • The "Lobed" Look: We look for "fat" lobes—the rounded tops of the heart. If the lobes are too flat, the heart loses its romantic shape.

Styling Your Heart Diamond at Jewelry by Cleo

A heart shape is a bold choice, and its setting should reflect that:

  • The Three-Prong Solitaire: To keep the shape looking clean, we often use a specialized 3-prong setting (one V-prong at the bottom point and two on the lobes) to let the silhouette shine.

  • The Toi et Moi: This is a JbC favorite. Pairing a heart diamond with another shape, like an Emerald or Pear, symbolizes two distinct personalities coming together.

  • The Bezel Frame: For a modern, "pop-art" look, a full gold bezel around a heart diamond makes the shape look crisp, defined, and incredibly chic.

Pro Tip: Heart shapes look best in sizes over 0.50 carats. In very small sizes, it can be hard for the eye to distinguish the "cleft," and the diamond may simply look like a round or pear stone from a distance.

Heart Diamond

Buying a heart shape requires a "visual first" approach. A certificate can't tell you if a heart looks pretty, but these specs will help you narrow it down.

SYMMETRY (The Most Important C) In a heart shape, symmetry is everything. If one side is even a hair larger than the other, the entire look is ruined.

  • JbC Advice: Draw an imaginary line down the center of the stone. The two halves should be mirror images. We hand-vet every heart in the JbC Vault to ensure the cleft is sharp and the points align perfectly.

CUT (The "Cleft" and the "Point") The cleft (the dip at the top) should be distinct and sharp. If it's too shallow, the stone looks like a "bloated" pear; if it's too deep, it can look split.

  • JbC Advice: We look for a distinct "V" at the top and a sharp point at the bottom to give the stone its iconic definition.

COLOR (Sensitivity at the Tips) Like pears and marquises, heart shapes can trap color at the very tip and along the rounded lobes.

  • JbC Advice: For a bright, white appearance, we recommend G or higher. If you are choosing a yellow gold setting, an H or I can offer a beautiful, warm vintage feel that complements the romantic nature of the shape.

CLARITY (Brilliance Hides Faults) Because the heart shape has a lot of "busy" sparkle, it is quite good at hiding small inclusions.

  • JbC Advice: Focus on an "Eye-Clean" SI1 or VS2. As long as the inclusion isn't right in the middle of the "table" (the top flat part), you won't see it through the sparkle.
